UIT is pleased to announce the appointment of retired U.S. Air Force Col. Matt Schroeder as director for Enterprise Security in the Information Security Office (ISO), effective May 1, 2025.
Schroeder brings more than two decades of cybersecurity, information technology, and engineering experience at the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Cyber Command, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Senate, and U.S. Department of Energy, as well as academic roles at George Washington University and University of Alaska to the position.
As the chief information officer and director of command, control, communications, and computer systems for U.S. Cyber Command, Schroeder led network operations, cybersecurity, and incident response for on-premises and cloud-based IT infrastructure across unclassified, secret, and top-secret network fabrics He managed a 130-person workforce and a significant research and development and operations budget, aligning cybersecurity and risk management strategies with mission objectives to develop secure technology architectures for complex systems.
In addition to operational leadership, Schroeder is an instructor for cybersecurity, technology ethics, and risk management at the University of Alaska. He previously taught cybersecurity strategy and information management at George Washington University.
In his new role at the University of Utah, Schroeder will assess organizational risks and evaluate emerging technologies, while determining long-term cybersecurity needs of the institution. He will lead the Security Operations Center, Security Assurance, and Security Engineering teams and oversee the planning and execution of incident response efforts. Additionally, he will regularly communicate cybersecurity risks and initiatives to stakeholders; collaborate with IT leaders, business units, and external partners to ensure cybersecurity measures are integrated across the organization. Schroeder will also evaluate the cybersecurity practices of third-party vendors and partners to ensure they meet the organization’s IT security standards and represent University Information Technology (UIT) in IT governance committees.
Schroeder reports to Chief Information Security Officer Jake Johansen.

Schroeder holds a Master of Science in strategic information and cyberspace studies from National Defense University, Master of Professional Studies in IT management from Georgetown University, Master of Business Administration from University of Wisconsin, and Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Cedarville University.
