New bulk email scheduling requirement takes effect 8/12
Because bulk email campaigns sent by University of Utah organizations result in system-wide UMail delivery delays for all users, University Information Technology (UIT) is establishing a schedule for bulk senders to follow. The schedule applies to bulk campaigns sent via UMail, Sympa lists, and external platforms such as MyEmma. Known bulk senders will receive a direct email to inform them of the schedule.
Schedule, effective Monday, August 12, 2024:
- 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday: Email campaigns with up to 5,000 contacts are permitted.
- After 4:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday: Email campaigns of any size are permitted.
- Weekends: Email campaigns of any size are permitted.
Bulk email campaigns that do not follow the schedule are subject to reduced sending speeds. Campaigns for emergency health and safety communications (e.g., Campus Alert) are exempt from this schedule.
If your organization would like to request an exception to the schedule for a particular campaign, please submit a ticket (login required; assignment Group “UIT – NCI – UMail & Collaboration”) and explain the reason for your request at least five (5) business days prior to the requested send date. A UMail team member will approve or deny your request within two (2) business days.
If you have any questions about the schedule, please contact Associate Director for Unified Communications James Rice at james.rice@utah.edu or 801-213-0808.
